Tom Urban – Adviser, Entrepreneurship and Agribusiness
Tom began his professional career in investment banking with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in 1988. He subsequently spent 14 years in the agricultural seeds business with Pioneer Hi-Bred and E.I. DuPont de Nemours primarily in Eastern and Western Europe. In 2004, Tom left DuPont to join the early-stage forestry genetics company, CellFor, Inc. and served as CellFor’s CEO until 2012 when the Company was sold to ArborGen, the market leader in forestry genetics. Tom founded Agribusiness Advisors in 2013 and is currently working with early-stage companies as an investor and advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors. The Agribusiness Advisors portfolio includes companies in traditional forestry, precision farming, bio-pesticides, insect protein, teak plantations, cocoa nurseries and industrial enzymes. Tom also serves as an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of British Columbia. Tom received his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Sean Myles, PhD – Adviser, Genomics
Dr. Sean Myles is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Agricultural Genetic Diversity in the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University. He received a BA at Saint Thomas University, a Masters in Human Biology at Oxford University and a PhD in Human Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany. Dr. Myles completed postdoctoral fellowships in plant genomics at Cornell and Standford, and his research group focuses on using genetic data to detect and dissect the effects of domestication and breeding on various crops, especially grapes and apples.
James Mutter – Legal Counsel
Jim is a senior corporate commercial business lawyer, trusted advisor and a seasoned business executive. Jim was previously a partner at the large national law firm of Fasken Martineau LLP, where he helped establish one of the largest technology law practices in Vancouver. Jim is also a co-founder of a venture backed (now re-located to Boston USA) network intelligence software company. Jim has been recognized in Martindale-Hubbell as a top business lawyer in Canada with a BV Peer Review Rating. Jim is the former President of the Premier’s Technology Council which was established to inform the Premier on all technology related issues and to advise government on how to make British Columbia a global magnet for high-tech investment growth and job creation. Jim has extensive experience assisting his clients with all business law matters including, mergers and acquisitions, fund creation, venture capital financing in a range of industries with a focus on emerging technology companies.
